THE CATHEDRAL OF THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN - VARNA
The Assumption Cathedral is one of the "must-see" highlights of any visit to Varna. The church is second in scale to St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia. It was built during 1884 to 1886 in honor of Bulgaria's Liberation from the Ottoman yoke.
The honor to lay the cornerstone of the temple fell to Prince Alexander I Batenberg on 22nd August 1880.
The Cathedral features modern Byzantine architecture and woodcarved iconostasis by masters belonging to the school of Debur.
The church is declared a national monument of culture
